The beans used to make our organic cacao butter are grown in the Peruvian amazon, the spiritual home of cacao. Our beans are 100% organic raw Criollo cacao beans, prized for their superior flavour over other varieties.
Our cacao products are neither roasted nor Dutch processed (alkalized), making them raw. This cacao butter has not been refined/deodorised meaning that its amazing chocolate scent remains. There are a variety of uses for cacao butter but it is most commonly used to make chocolate and making homemade soap and moisturisers, lip balm, body butter and other cosmetics.
Cacao and Peru have a long history together, with the fruit and its beans having been enjoyed by natives long before it was exported worldwide.
There are different varieties of cacao, however the Criollo variety is growing rapidly in popularity due to its higher quality resulting from greater fat content. Exquisite Peruvian cacao is well suited to agroforestry systems, which have less environmental impact compared to plantations in West Africa where it is typically grown in direct sunlight with fertilisers. This has led to substantial deforestation and makes Peruvian cacao a more sustainable option.
Almost all of Peru’s cacao is grown by small holders who rely on cacao’s weekly harvest (the main harvest is from April – September, known locally as la cosecha grande) as their main source of income. Their crop is then sold to cooperatives who act as intermediaries; the cacao is then processed in Peru before being trucked to Lima and exported to the UK where we lovingly package it before sending it to you
NONE OF OUR CACAO PRODUCTS CONTAIN ANY ADDITIVES OR PRESERVATIVES. THIS IS 100% CACAO BUTTER, NOTHING ADDED, NOTHING TAKEN AWAY!
Pure 100% organic Cacao/Cocoa butter is made from premium Cacao beans, extracted when the beans are pressed, separating the butter from the Cacao paste. It contains several beneficial saturated fats such as Palmitic Acid. It is used primarily as an ingredient in chocolate, as well as being the core ingredient in some skin care products. It has a fantastic chocolately aroma, a delicate chocolate flavour and a light texture, and when mixed with a lightweight oil, makes an interesting baking ingredient.
In recent times, Cacao has attracted attention due to its nutritionally-rich profile, and the health benefits associated with its antioxidant content. In addition to supporting the body’s immune system, skin and hair, Cacao products have been known to reduce anxiety whilst simultaneously promoting alertness. A cup of cocoa can actually provide the same energy as a cup of coffee. Controversially, there is also evidence to suggest that a good number of the health benefits that are known to be contributed to cacao beans indicate a possibility that they could be a weight loss aid. Cacao butter wafers can be added to smoothies, desserts or used as a cooking ingredient. Cacao butter is also used as a natural moisturiser.
